An unexpected pleasure…

A Slice of Life Day 11 – 03/11/2018

When I was at school, a very, very, very long time ago, I used to find math a very difficult and inexplicable subject. I just didn’t get numbers and how to use them or how to make much sense of them, so I struggled throughout my school years and found it my least favourite subject…..

Now as I teach maths to my students I am starting to find a beauty in numbers that I never expected. I have discovered through explaining it in simple terms to those who are just learning what numbers are all about and how to use them, makes the subject suddenly come alive. Plus it is all starting to make much more sense to me than it used to.

I don’t pretend that I can do any of the hard stuff or work out algebra or other abstract concepts. Calculus and logarithms are pretty much just words to me.

But I am finding a delight in playing with numbers as I explain them to my students and show them what fun it can be to work out problems in every day life, using addition, subtraction and multiplication and the importance of being accurate and checking and rechecking, that I thought I would only ever experience with words.


I have no idea how the above works, but it’s called a compound of five cubes and I think it’s just stunning…!

  1. I hated math! As a teacher with 25 years of experience I read What’s Math Got To Do With It by Jo Boaler about 10 years ago and my understanding of math completely changed. Then I took her online math class through Stanford (it’s free) and was even more excited about math. Then she started a website:, and now I am completely intrigued by math and I am a better teacher because of it. I can now see a beauty in that compound cube you shared.

  2. I totally get what you’re saying. I used to hate math and my dad and I used to fight over the dinner table doing math homework. But, teaching it now it makes so much more sense. Perhaps if kids did more talking it would help them with their math understanding.
