This gets me every time…

DAY 3 SOL 23

When she came to be tested for admission last October, I was told by one teacher, ‘None of her family has been to school before.’ She has six brothers and none of them have been to school.

This isn’t normally the case with our students, most of the children have some sort of schooling, even if they don’t end up completing high school. I’m still not sure of the reason why her brothers never went to school. It’s hard to make the choices as we only have space for twelve new students and sometimes up to forty apply.

Our new class attended school for a few hours a day for about three weeks during November, so they get a feel for learning in English and to adjust to a very different form of schooling. They returned with everyone else at the end of January to build on that knowledge. Along with the other newcomers, this little girl has settled into a new school year with the chance to shine and reach her full potential.

It gets me every time…education is the key to her making a difference, impacting her community, changing the dynamic of her family and I get to be a part of it…..

GRATITUDE Day 3 To be a part of the magic of education that can change a child’s life forever.

  1. This is both heart-warming and heart-breaking. So many children want to go to school and can’t. So many kids in the US complain about having to go to school. Education is a privilege, and as you say, it is the key to changing a child’s destiny.

    1. Thanks for reading Glenda! yes it is an ongoing problem when the privileged don’t know how privileged they are because they never get to see those who have so little.
